There are all sorts of different types of registration available:
Dateless British Car Registrations such as MW 9 and DON 7 are old original cherished number plates and whilst desirable, they are the most expensive because of their age and the fact that the letters come first in the combination. Three letter number plates have numbers from 1 to 999. Two lettered plates may be followed by the numbers 1 to 9999 and date back as far as the beginning of the century.
Reversed Dateless British Car Registrations such as 5 DRG and 400 CRB are reversed cherished number plates and maybe a little less expensive than the original cherished marks. Choices within this category with three letters start with numbers from 1 to 999. Combinations within this category with two letters may be proceeded by the number range 1 to 9999.
Suffix Car Registrations are plates with the year letter at the end of the combination and examples may be as follows: ABC 1E or ABC 67P or ABC 999Y . Combinations within this category always have three letters and use the numbers 1 to 999 plus the suffix indicators A through to Y, excluding I, O, Q, U and Z.
Prefix Car Registration Numbers are combinations with the year letters at the beginning of the combination and examples appear as: E15 JON or J7 SUE or X7 ANN. Combinations within this category always have three letters and may be proceeded by the number range 1 to 999 plus the prefix indicators excluding I, O, Q, U and Z. Prefix plates were issued by THE DVLA from 1983 until 1999. We still have around 25 million DVLA plates for sale.
Irish registrations such as GAZ 27 or JIL 6 are issued with three letters first containing at least one I or Z, followed by between one and four numbers. Old Southern Irish registrations such as ID 3423 are rare but may be found from time to time. This range of marks always contain an I or a Z and a number between 1 and 9999. Irish registrations are usually a little cheaper than British Car Registrations.
'Q' Car Numbers are reserved for the replacement of marks where a vehicle registration has been previously made void, or the age of the vehicle is indeterminable. They cannot take part in the transfer scheme although there are plans to introduce them for sale by the DVLA Registrations one day.
